The Best Blogging Advice For Beginners, When Writing Blogs
If you have just spent the last month building your WordPress website, and now you want to start your blogging website, avoid these classic mistakes. It will be hard to accept at first, but through bitter experience, I learnt this the hard way you cannot make money in a month online with a website. Just forget it!
You need to get ready to write for the long haul and be consistent. Content over social media is key to the success of your website and everything you may need to know going forward.
This website has affiliate links that I earn a commission from without any extra cost to you. This means that if you click on a link and purchase something, I might make a little money. You will not be charged extra, and some of the affiliate links I use have discounts so stay tuned!
Choose your blog niche wisely
I bet a lot of money you have heard this one before so I will be brief. If you are writing about gardening in your backyard, then that is a niche onto itself, and you should write about only that so that in the future your readers will keep returning to see what they can do while gardening in their backyard. It is difficult, but you must stick to one niche topic and only write about that specific topic. You the reason everyone online cries “niche niche niche…” is simple; your niche defines what your online presence is about.
You need a niche because:
- it defines your online presence
- your audience will return because they know you have all the info they want on one topic
- Google will recognise you for that topic (in time) and put your article up on its pages when someone makes a search
Blog about something you like
It is essential that you write about something you are passionate about or a subject you like. For any blogger writing content continuously is part of the MO so why do you want to write about something:
- you do not enjoy
- you are not knowledgeable about
- you find boring
Quality content over quantity
It is in fact just common sense and just skip ahead if you already guessed what I am going to suggest. Making two posts which are:
- well written
- properly organised
- thoroughly researched (you made Google searches on keywords and other research like what kind of competition the topic is getting or not getting)
These are much more valuable than five posts which are poorly written, badly organised, and you made some random research on them. Quality always wins in the long run, and that is what you want to be known for.
If you are blogging about something that is not being written about, well jackpot
If you write about some topic that you or your friends cannot seem to find decent articles about then you have hit the bloggers jackpot. Not today but a year or eight months from now, you will reap serious organic traffic from Google making you a titan in blogging. Some people think that a topic that is not on Google or a topic that has little information online will not be searched at all, and they will not get any visitors at all.
Such is not the case, and it is the opposite. I wish I had done some prior research on my blogging niche. Being a headstrong buffoon, I did not, and now my competitors are innumerable. If you make a Google search on anything and you frustrated on not getting a proper, satisfactory answer, then that is a golden opportunity for a blogging niche.
Think about it, if you are the only one writing about say how to grow your pineapples then so many people will come to your site for the topic. No one wants to read through an online farmers forum. If they can instead, read a well written and researched article, that will not only answer their questions but also solve some of their problems by making suitable recommendations as to how they should prepare the soil and more.
Make a blogging schedule
All the best of the best advice that every blogger make a blogging schedule to follow for a consistent content flow. It may work for some people, but I am not one of them. I find making a specific number of blogs that I need to publish, which I make into a blog deadline. It is what works for me. In this way, it is a mental challenge for me. For example, I will say that every month I want at least 20 blog posts published. So then I just to meet my challenge. It is easy to lose track of your website and forget that you need to be consistent.
For consistency you will need to:
- make a note of how many blogs you will write each week and what the total every month will be
- make a time that you will write your blog every day at that time or place
- stick to it even if you would rather watch a period drama or read your favourite comic strip
- make a reminder on your phone
- get your close buddy to slap you into action (just kidding but if you can try to get a friend, spouse, child anyone, make them take accountability from you)
Consistency is not my strong suit, so I countered it by making a list of blogs I wanted online and a deadline. Admittedly this is not a recommended technique because it can and does hurt my SEO. All bloggers should find a method that works best for them.
Be consistent no matter what
If you miss one blog or make a list of blogs and for some reason, you did not post 20 blogs, but instead, you posted 19 no big deal. We all have a life full of speed breakers, but you must overcome and persevere.
Consistency is essential because It makes your website legitimate to Google and your readers. Honestly, the more content you write, the more your chances of people reading your content increases. Because if you made a post about one topic and then branched out into the finer details, then someone somewhere is going to be asking those questions and wanting your answers.
If you make high-quality content that is 3000-4000 words long, and you post it online for times a month, then Google will put you up as a valuable contributor to the online world. Content is king, fuhrer, and the czar of Russia when it comes to making your online success.
Make blogs that are at least 2000-2500 words long
Your regular post should be 2000 words long because everything shorter doesn’t get seen online. You are not the only person writing about whatever your topic is, so it is essential to keep this in mind when writing blogs.
You see the algorithm of Google is too smart to fool nowadays. Also, Google employs thousands of people to sift through all the websites online to find the most informative and relevant content for their front pages. If you write a half-hearted 500-page blog with brief answers to questions that some people may have then you will not be considered relevant to Google. Everyone is writing something online, but your objective is to make useful content, relevant content that will stand out from the crowd.
Blogging strategy
I have made a blogging strategy that all beginner bloggers should follow. Of course, if you can write more content, then that is better, but a crucial thing to remember is that your blogs should contain big informative blogs that have a bucket load of information in an organised fashion. If your readers leave your website because you gave too little information, then Google will start to demote you. It will see your site as not worthy for first page rankings.
Divide your blogs into three lengths types. Then make four blogs each, every month, at these lengths:
- 5000-4000 words long
- 2500-2000 words long
- 2000-1500 words long
You can play around with this table, but if you do follow this strategy then you will have a monthly output of twelve blogs a month and one-third of them will be these cornerstone content blogs that Google loves. Your audience will grow, and you will be considered a worthy website.
You are not the first and don’t worry
When I started moneywithi.com, I had no idea what the hell I was up against. Yep, I was and still am a rookie ina sense. My biggest stupidity was making a website and domain name that correlates with personal finance. What a naive thought it was when I thought to myself, oh money making strategies is a non-perishable fashion. I like to make money online, and there must be so many like me. I did not bother looking up what are the downsides of creating a blog about personal finance.
If you want to know why this was a dumb idea in hindsight then here is why the competition is massive. It is like fighting with my stepmother when I was eight. I am going to lose and lose badly.
Needless to say, when I realised what a foolish endeavour this was I was like what the hell I’m going to continue. I am going to write in detail about all these Penny Hoarders write about in short sweeping statements. I will show Google Clorinda-Pedia has spunk and metal behind her money-making gigs.
Similarly, your blogging idea may not be never before seen or heard of. Sure someone has written about it, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot do research and write about it too. Moreover, you can do more research and write more prominent better blogs that will be number one page ranking material.
Do not lose confidence in your blogging
New websites take eight to twelve months before you can adequately assimilate whether or not your site is going to make you some passive income. Running a website is like starting a business or planting a tree. If you plant the seed of a lemon tree today, it will give you some fruit after at least a year.
You got two views yesterday and no views today, so your confidence is nonexistent. I know your pain! Still, just keep at it. You see, Google doesn’t even want to give out ad sense to some websites because they are under six months old. If you are new in the market, then it will take some months to a year before you see some income. It is the case of most sites.
If you read clickbait type articles like how to make 10,000 in your first-month blogging just know that it is complete garbage! You need hard work, consistency, and dedication.
Check out your competition for blogging ideas
Whatever your niche topic is you should make a google search and read a few articles on their site. You should do this for two reasons. The first reason is that you will get some serious writing prompts from your competition.
Secondly, and most importantly, if you serf their site thoroughly and find a blog that is not optimal. For example, the blog you read is under 1500 words long. It does not cover everything it should, but you, my smart human compatriot, can write your version of the blog at 3000-4000 words. Then when someone searches that topic online a year from now who do you think will be at the top?
The only way to beat a big competition is to find weaknesses
I know this heading might sound like the blog heading that Lex Luthor wrote, but it is the most effective way to make way for yourself with the heavy lifters.
You will usually find weaknesses in super magnified niches. After I realised too late that my site was up against big competition, this is what I did. I have written an almost five thousand word blog on 32 ways you can make money online. After that, I never looked back.
Polish your writing as much as possible
The quality of your writing should be the best it can be. If you are like the webmaster of this site, who makes innumerable errors in the text, then get Grammarly on Chrome, and you can always use Scribens for extra suggestions.
If you think that your writing capabilities are lousy, please stop. With writing continuously and over a length of time, your writing will automatically improve. You can also take free writing classes online at Coursera.
How to write content fast and efficiently
If you want to write efficiently then when you sit down to write, do not play music. Find a place that is quiet and comfortable. Please put your laptop on a table, not your lap. Did you know that even tablets were made for hard surfaces like tables and not your lap!
Use the just write method, and when you sit at your desk, write your thoughts out continuously. After you have written the entire article, you can proofread and edit it, making all manner of adjustments. If you stop and start while writing, you will lose your train of thought and eventually you may become bored by the very idea of writing.
Of course this works for some of us but it is not the same for everyone, so find the writing technique that suits you best.
How to make the layout of your post
My method is to make a heading with five or ten sub-headings. Your first heading should be your title tag heading that tells your readers what your post is about. Under it give a brief intro and make a meta description paragraph that is about two sentences long. Always remember to directly answer the question of your post in the second paragraph as it will make your post more SEO optimized.
Write the content of your post with subheadings that are relevant to your title meta tag. In this way, your readers will be able to easily navigate through your text to find what they are looking for. If your subheadings veer away from your topic, this is a huge SEO mistake as it will not only leave your readers unsatisfied and confused, but Google will find your post to be not relevant.
How to keep your blog sub-headings on topic
A way to accomplish this is to make a heading that goes, “How to grow pineapples in my backyard”. Now ask yourself, what would your reader’s next question be? If I were making the query, then I would want to know answers to issues like:
- what climate does a pineapple need
- how should I prepare the soil for a pineapple plant
- what fertiliser should I use for a pineapple plant
- how deep the soil should be for a pineapple plant
- how long does it take for the pineapple plant grow
- when will I get the pineapples
- how should I harvest the pineapples
In this fashion, you can easily find writing prompts and stay on topic, which is essential for great SEO. By now, you all should know how important SEO is for your site.
My final thoughts
If you are a beginner blogger like me, do not be put off by the ghost town that doesn’t even have a ghost in it on your analytics page. It will remain a ghost town for about eight months to a year. Write good content, and it will be found. Hard work pays off guys.
If I can get 40 pages views in one day, after writing some ten posts, being only two months old, anyone can do better. Chin up and I post weekly so do come back for more.
