Worst Blog Niches

These are the most saturated or hard to get authoritativeness with blog niches you should avoid. It is hard to make a name for yourself on a subject that has a lot of information already covered, there are YouTube videos on the subject, and every other platform has the topic covered with information that even I have a hard time surpassing. You may have already heard many people talk about “niches” and how important they are, well your niche site should not be a niche that millions have already written thousands of words on. Find a niche that is focused on one specific aspect of the topic.

An example would be as follows:

  • a blog about dogs or a blog about Dobermans
  • a blog about tech or a blog about baking equipment under 500$
  • a blog about food or a blog about vegan restaurants in some specific countries

If you do not become niche-specific, and write blogs about over-saturated topics, even if your blogs are well written they will rank lower. Sadly 25% of people making Google searches online only click on the first blog post at the top of the page. I am mostly part of the 25%, so I know therein lies the truth.

The purpose of a blog should be how can you help someone on a topic. Answer questions informatively and concisely. Direct your readers to helpful resources where they can make purchases or find the things they are looking for. Your objective is to be helpful and if you are then success is just around the corner.

The worst blog niches are:

  1. Personal finance
  2. Health and fitness
  3. Pet health care
  4. Cookery
  5. News
  6. General blogs
  7. Tech blogs
  8. Mature or gambling blogs

If you are starting your very first blog, do not even touch these blog topics. Not only are they overly saturated, but the authority that they have developed with Google as a site will be incredibly hard to surpass; they have financial advisers, seasoned chefs and doctors behind them.

1. Personal finance

Finance is a big topic but it has been covered time and again in all its forms. From frugality to money-making schemes, personal finance is frankly oversaturated. Many bloggers, myself included think “oh I wanna make money online, and I wanna start a blog, so I will just discover the best ways to money making online and bam my niche is perfect.”

If only someone had warned me, if only I had not read that poorly written blog about the five most popular blogs online! While it is true that five of these topics are the most popular blogs online they are too wide and properly covered by other professional bloggers who have with time made a name for themselves online.

Almost any query you make about how to make money offline or online has been already written about it in detail. The only way in which you can overcome this is by magnifying your search and finding top searches that are poorly covered. It is the only way in which you can get Google page rankings on page one.

Worse still Google will check your blog to see if you have a history in finance, or if you are a financial adviser to back-up your advice because when it comes to health, money and news you have to be someone with authority on the subject.

2. Cookery

Hardly anyone buys cook books these days due to the overwhelming amount of recipes available online. YouTube and Google are overflowing with recipes of all number of things.

Recipes without sugar, recipes for a ketogenic diet, recipes for CDC, recipes for gluten intolerant people. Some of these websites and YouTube channels have nutritionists behind them others have doctors. Furthermore, now some YouTube channels have trained chefs giving away their Michelin star recipes. So unless you are really talented and you have some amazing way to cook that no one has ever heard of please avoid a recipe blog.

The only way in which you can perhaps make a name for yourself in this niche is if you find an unsaturated niche topic in cooking. like how to eat in Japan as a vegan. Beware of magnifying a niche as they can be hard to monetise.

3. Health and fitness

Again are you a fitness instructor or do you have some background in personal training? Even if you are many, many people have covered everything already. Can you make a blog that will surpass web MD and all the thousands of other bloggers who have made an authoratativeness with Google over the years?

For a health blog you would have to be a doctor and even then you would probably have a hard time fighting the competition. People have written about serious health issues like kidney disease and everyday conundrums like hair fall to death!

The only way in which you can come out on top is if you can find a topic that you have had trouble finding an informative answer to online. If you think you can fill the gap and write about fifty articles on that one subject then go for it. Of course to be succesful in this niche you should ask the experts to review your writings before publishing them and then you can always add in your blog that it has been approved by a professional. You should be able to prove that you did in fact have it approved for more credibility.

If you have a topic that needs to be covered do not hesitate to look into your possibilities and write about it, but know what you are up against.

4. Pet health care

To be brief pet MD. and so many other websites have already covered all number of health issues in your pet. Again you need authoritativeness because you could be misdiagnosing someones pet.

Before we become too negative about this niche you can magnify it and make a blog about a specific breed and write on! Also, you can look into apparel for dogs, like sports or how to make them lose weight. I have a pomeranian who is obese and I would love to know how I can make her lose some fat. Sadly, she has weak knees so making her run over hoops is not ideal.

It is still tricky because you really should not be so magnified in your topic that too few people make a search about it, nonetheless, the blog should not be too broad.

5. News

How can anyone make a news blog that outranks all the other news websites? Case and point! Still let’s look into this topic. The worst part of making a news blog is that you need to keep your website updated everyday. It is a lot of work and where will you get your information from, and how will Google know it is legitimate information.

Think of it like this, when you read your news would you read BBC, CNN, FOX or My Awesome News?

The only way in which you can write about news is if you find a niche that many people are interested in and write about it in a questioning manner, humorously or find an area of news that will catch people’s attention.

I do not suggest you follow through with this niche as there are constant speculations about whether the author of the news should not be copied. If it becomes illegal that will just be another milestone to overcome.

6. General blogs

Being general is useless because your readers have no idea what the point of your website is and why they should return at all!? A general blog can be successful if you have multiple authors’ writing your content and then your site would, in essence, be a pseudo-news blog. Even so, your website needs a purpose and direction.

7. Tech blogs

Another oversaturated niche and do not even thinks about writing about an unboxing. People want to see the product being unpacked, also this is done and over done on youtube so please skip it.

If you see an emerging technology that has a market life then maybe you can dominate an entire blog about it, but you will have to do serious research to see what your competitors are covering.

If I had to start a blog about tech it would definitely be drones and cameras. I would also make a YouTube channel on the subject because that would drive a huge amount of traffic to my site.

8. Mature or gambling blogs

Eeeeeek! Please do not do it! How will you monetise the site legally and there is a lot of legal work you would have to look into. Gambling is a scam no matter how you look at it, and all the ads that I ever see are completely ignored or reported.

Ugh! One time some idiot sent me mature content on Pinterest and guess what I did? Yep, I reported him and unfollowed him.

Just forget it these topics are horrible and illegal mostly!

Final Thoughts

Writing content is easy after you have a viable plan to follow through with. Your blog should be unique in some way even if it is a small thing you do at the end of your blog or something free you offer.

Be incredibly helpful always.
